Whether moving into a new property or simply looking for a quick and effective way of giving a room an updated look, fitted blinds are a great option.

There are two main categories of blinds - horizontal and vertical. As the names suggest, horizontal blinds have slats that run across the width of the window and vertical blinds feature slats that run down the length.

Both types of blinds can be made of various materials, such as vinyl, wood, aluminium or fabric. The angle that these slats or vanes are held at can be changed to control the amount of light that enters the room and increase privacy.

Because the slats overlap they help to keep out cold air and on hot days they provide shade, making them ideal for conservatories or porches. Even when open to allow light in they can still help to keep out flies and insects.

Vertical blinds

Vertical blinds are better-suited to larger windows and patios and sliding doors because they can be drawn across like curtains, allowing easy access. Rigid vertical blinds are particularly good in this situation as they are durable and stable.

Overall, vertical blinds are less likely to be damaged so are great for families with children or pets. They are also much more practical in terms of cleaning as they do not collect as much dust and are easy to use.

Where there is little space at the side of the windows vertical blinds can be ideal as they stack closely together when opened, taking up less room than curtains and tie-backs.

Suggestion: A great choice is 50mm red venetian blinds, perfect for lounges and large bedrooms

Horizontal blinds

Horizontal blinds are great for smaller windows that do not need to be opened as often. This is because the blind must be drawn all the way up for the window behind to be properly accessed and opened.

They offer more adaptability in terms of letting light in while maintaining privacy and on wide windows, several sets of horizontal blinds can be used to give complete coverage along with flexibility.

These blinds generally get dirtier quicker because the horizontal slats gather dust, are more susceptible to damage in the wind or by children and pets brushing past them and require greater strength to draw up.

Suggestion: Great for kitchens, bedrooms and offices. Even better in a wood finish.]
